How Online Therapy Works

WHAT IS ONLINE COUNSELING OR THERAPY?

Online therapy offers a new way to reach a psychotherapist. Through this site, I offer consultations via e-mail, or MSN chat. So, you can contact me from anywhere, and I will respond within 24 hours.

E-mail therapy is not suitable for emergencies or any sort of urgent crisis. If you are feeling like killing yourself or someone else, or you are feeling completely out of control, STOP reading and please call your local emergency department, distress center, or a person close by, who cares about you.

WHEN IS ONLINE THERAPY HELPFUL?

Online therapy is a good choice for people who have difficulty getting to a therapist. Do you live in a rural area, or an area where English is not the first language? Do you work long or irregular hours? Are you agoraphobic, or do you have difficulty leaving the house for emotional or physical reasons? Do you have a hearing or speech impediment, which limits your access to 'talk' therapy? All of these situations can make face to face therapy difficult or impossible to access

You can take as much time as you like to compose your thoughts and put them down in writing, you can do this whenever you have free time, and can do it in the comfort of your own home. As long as you have a computer and a modem, you can access therapy from anywhere

Anything that's bothering you can be resolved or explored through online therapy.

Online therapy is appropriate for people who are comfortable writing out their thoughts and can do so quite easily. Some people simply prefer email or chat as a method of communication.

Have you been feeling depressed, anxious, or stressed out, about work, relationships, a loss, or a significant life event? Talking about it can help. Exploring this with a therapist can help you become "unstuck" and can help you develop skills for change.

This can be a one time consultation or by a regularly or semi regularly scheduled online appontments.

IS FACE TO FACE THERAPY BETTER?

Online therapy is new, and different, and while it is useful and productive, some problems are better managed with old fashioned therapy. If your issues involve severe mental health issues or severe damage from childhood, a face to face therapist wil probably make you feel more comforted and secure while dealing with your issues.

DISADVANTAGES TO ONLINE THERAPY

The loss of non-verbal messages. While a lot of emotions and personality can be expressed through writing, the added value of facial expressions, body language, pauses, and sighs are missing.
